THE ALBUM
Pink Floyd: Endless River

The big album release this month is undoubtedly Pink Floyd's Endless River (Parlophone/Columbia). It is the band's 15th studio album, and probably the last. In actual fact it doesn't contain any new material but recordings that were originally made for another album, Division Bell, in 1994. Roger Waters had left the group in 1985 – after a bitter "divorce" – but David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright carried on without him. Rick Wright died in 2008 and so Gilmour and Mason decided to release Endless River as "Rick's swan song." And what does Roger Waters (who fired Wright from the group during the making of The Wall), think of the new project? He told his followers on Facebook: "I am not part of Pink Floyd and I have nothing to do with Endless River."

RECOMMENDED READING
Willa Cather

For our recommended reading for foreign students of English we have chosen not one book but three. They are all by Willa Cather (1873-1947) and make up her "Great Plains Trilogy." The titles are O Pioneers!, The Song of the Lark and My Antonia. The books were written around the time of the First World War, but describe life on the American frontier, particularly Nebraska, a state that has inspired other novelists, as well as film makers and even Bruce Springsteen. For an expert opinion, we asked John Young, a university lecturer, translator and voice artist. He tells us: "Willa Cather writes with great simplicity and in a style that is perfectly accessible for the Italian reader, but at the same time her stories contain a gentle, observant honesty. She's a very moving writer and I can't recommend her too highly."

THE MOVIES
Horrible Bosses 2

As with Christmas, the Thanksgiving holiday (November 27th) is a great time for movie releases. And heading the list is the comedy Horrible Bosses 2 (the sequel to Horrible Bosses, which came out in the summer of 2011). In the first movie, three men, played by Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman (pictured below), were the victims of horrible bosses – played by Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey. And so they decided to murder them, with the help of a "murder consultant," played by Jamie Foxx.  In the sequel the trio now run their own business, but things aren't going well, and so they resume their life of crime...
