Mark Worden (Standard British accent):
The March issue of Speak Up contains a feature on Lowell, Massachusetts, the home town of Jack Kerouac. In this out-take, Steve Edington, who organises the annual Kerouac festival, takes us to the grave of the On the Road author:
It’s like the destination on a spiritual journey for people whose lives have been inspired and touched by Kerouac in some way. It’s like, if you’re a Muslim, if you practise the Islamic faith, you’re supposed to go to Mecca at least once in your life, if you’re a devotee of Kerouac, you’re supposed to come to his gravesite at least once in your life! It’s like a holy pilgrimage, same as going to Mecca, or for a Catholic to go to St Peter’s in Rome, or something like that. If you’re a real devotee of Kerouac, this is sort of part of your journey. I… fortunately, I just live half an hour away, so I can come here whenever I feel like it!
