trovo la tua serie Public Speaking davvero interessante e utile. E c’è una cosa cui hai vagamente accennato che mi piacerebbe approfondire: riguarda il linguaggio del corpo, di noi italiani! Mi sono reso conto che, effettivamente, inglesi e americani ritengono che noi facciamo troppi gesti con le mani, per non parlare di baci e abbracci che dispensiamo con tranquillità e familiarità. Quindi? Come mi devo comportare? Devo trattenermi? Hai consigli?

You are absolutely right - body language is a very important part of public speaking and I will definitely talk about hand gestures and physical movement later in the series when we discuss speaking to large groups. For now you should remember one or two important things. Most Italian hand gestures have absolutely no meaning in other cultures, so people won’t understand them and in general British and American people tend to leave more space between themselves and the people they are talking to – at least with strangers.

ho letto con interesse il tuo articolo sulle proteste riguardo al Columbus Day e alla celebrazione di un uomo che ha dato inizio a delle persecuzioni terribili. Ma nell’intervista Fawn Douglas dice che alcuni italo-americani si sono scusati con lei per questo, e va bene, ma cosa dire degli spagnoli? In fondo erano loro i colonizzatori. Gli americani danno la colpa solo agli italiani?

I hesitate to speak for Fawn but I don’t believe the point is to blame anyone for the atrocities of the past, as certainly only those directly responsible can be held accountable. However, what is vital is that Americans of all European ancestry acknowledge the brutal way in which Native Americans were treated by their ancestors. One way to achieve this is through direct apology to people like Fawn, who continue to struggle for equality in their native land.
