Ranked No.7 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest shows of all time, The Twilight Zone was a pioneering American TV series that ran through five seasons, from 1959 to 1964. It is an anthology of mysterious tales in the dark fantasy, psychological horror or science fiction genre. Some of them were based on stories by famous writers, including Ray Bradbury and speculative fiction writer Charles Beaumont. The show's creator, Rod Serling, hosted each episode, which starred both well-known and less well-known actors. Serling described The Twilight Zone as “a series of imaginative tales that are not bound by time or space or the established laws of nature.”
This brand new series, aired from the 1st of April on CBS, draws on the original show – not least in spirit! Rod Serling was an anti-war activist, a campaigner for racial equality and an outspoken critic of mainstream TV in the 1960s, which he found unimaginative and formulaic. Serling, who died in 1975, channelled his angry politics and concerns about society into The Twilight Zone episodes, each of which contained elements of dark comedy and horror. Frequent themes included nuclear war, anti-Communist paranoia and mass hysteria.
Although a revived series of The Twilight Zone in the 1980s was not as successful as the black and white reruns, for the 2019 reboot, the comedian, writer, producer, and director Jordan Peele seems the ideal candidate to step into Serling's shoes. Peele's directorial debut film Get Out –which got him the Oscar for best screenplay– is a comic and caustic commentary on the hypocrisy of white liberal America that would not be out of place as an episode on the show!
The Twilight Zone is among a number of dark comic fantasy shows launching this year, others include a series based on Philip Pullman’s novels for young adults His Dark Materials, and a mini-series based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimon’s book Good Omens.
