Wang was born in New York in 1949. Her family left Shanghai in 1947 after the Communist Revolution in China. Wang didn’t study fashion design at university; she studied Art History. She graduated in 1971 and became fashion editor at Vogue magazine. She says that Vogue offers the best possible training for a career in fashion. She left Vogue in 1987 and became a designer for the Ralph Lauren fashion house.
In 1990 Wang started her own business. She sold wedding dresses. She imported the dresses of obscure European designers. She quickly gained a reputation for her refined taste. Wang then introduced her own designs and in 1994 she launched her own label. Today the name Vera Wang is a synonym for the finest wedding dresses in the world, but her range also includes lingerie, furs, shoes, jewellery, perfumes and tableware.
Wang was an enthusiastic ice skater as a child. She trained as a figure skater, and competed in the 1968 US Figure Skating Championships. She stopped skating when she failed to make the US Olympic team that year. She has used this experience as a designer. She has designed the costumes for the US Olympic team and famous skaters such as Nancy Kerrigan. Wang was inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2009. This wasn’t for skating, however: It was for her contribution to the sport as a costume designer.
How much is a Vera Wang wedding dress? From €400 to €9,000.
