Harry and Meghan v. the Palace

March 2021: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were interviewed by Oprah Winfrey about life inside the royal family. The interview was broadcast in the US on CBS to an audience of over seventeen million, and the following day on UK television. The couple spoke openly for an hour and a half, and made a series of incendiary and far-reaching allegations. Racism, constraint and mental health were some of the issues they raised. Markle, pregnant with the couple’s second child that she revealed to be a girl, confessed that she had had suicidal thoughts during her time as a working royal for “the Firm”, as she nicknamed the household. She alleged that while she was expecting their first child Archie and being herself of mixed race, someone in the family expressed concern about the potential skin colour of the baby. According to the British press, the interview revealed a toxic environment, constituting the worst palace crisis in over eighty-five years. The impact of Harry and Meghan’s claims on the future of the British monarchy is yet to be seen. They come at a time when criminal allegations against Prince Andrew threaten to damage the institution irreparably. With regards to the Harry and Meghan interview, Buckingham Palace quickly released a statement declaring that the whole family was “saddened” by their account, and that the issues raised “particularly that of race”, were “concerning” and would be “addressed by the family privately”.
