SAFE AND SOUND
Salve Speak Up!
Ho visto che la traduzione inglese dell’espressione ‘sano e salvo’ è ‘safe and sound’, ma da qualche parte ho sentito anche ‘safe and sane’. Quest’ultima è corretta? Maria

Hi Maria,
I’m afraid ‘safe and sane’ is incorrect, but it doesn’t surprise me that you have doubts given that you found it on the internet! I imagine that this is a false friend, as the English word ‘sane’ sounds like the Italian word ‘sano (fisicamente)’. In fact, the word actually means ‘sana (di mente)’. ‘Sound’, on the other hand, apart from meaning ‘sonido’, also means ‘in buona salute’. Rachel

TOO / AS WELL
Hi! La domanda che vorrei farvi è questa: come tradurreste in inglese queste due frasi che in italiano hanno significato decisamente diverso così come sono, anche senza inserirle in un contesto: 1) “Anch’io studio inglese.”; 2) “Io studio anche inglese.”
D’istinto io tradurrei, rispettivamente: 1) “I also study English.”; 2) “I study English, too/as well.” Ma non ne sono affatto sicura, tant’è che, se dovessi tornare dall’inglese all’italiano, non saprei quale significato dare.
Grazie tante, Giovanna Betti Parentiti

Dear Giovanna,
It is a tricky question because in English you really need some context to make the two concepts clear. Also it can refer to any part of the sentence: 1) “Jim studies English and I also study English.” ; 2) “I study French and also English.”
The first sentence would be OK in formal written English, but very uncommon in spoken English. In fact 'also' usually refers to the part of the sentence that comes after the subject. So sentence 2) sounds more colloquial and natural. To refer to the subject it is more common to use ‘too’ and ‘as well’: “Jim studies English and I do too/as well.” So basically I would invert your two solutions.
1) “Anch’io studio inglese”;  “I study English too/as well”. 2) “Io studio anche inglese”; “I also study English”. Rachel
