Next month punk rock fans from Ireland, Spain, Japan, Australia and many other countries will go to the British seaside resort of Blackpool for the Rebellion Festival. The festival’s organiser, John Robb, tells Speak Up that it is “probably the world’s biggest punk festival. We expect about 10,000 people over the four day period. At least 10 per cent of them are from abroad. Italian fans are welcome. People will be really curious to meet them!”

Rebellion will run from August 8th to 11th and it combines two great British institutions: punk rock and Blackpool. Punk rock began with the Sex Pistols in 1976. Blackpool is older. It became a popular holiday resort for factory workers from the north of England in the Victorian era. It also did well in the 20th century, but when British people started going on holiday abroad in the 1960s, it began to suffer. John Robb, who grew up in Blackpool, thinks that this has its advantages for visitors. He says: “You can have a great time in Blackpool, even if you don’t have any money. It’s unpretentious and the bed and breakfasts are really cheap.”

John Robb is the lead singer of Goldblade, who are based in Manchester. Goldblade are one of the 200 groups playing at Rebellion. Other acts include The Damned, The Buzzcocks, Sham 69, Eddie and the Hotrods, Captain Sensible and Lena Lovich. There will be six stages in the venue, Blackpool Winter Gardens. John says: “It was built in 1870 and has a spectacular history. People like (ukulele legend) George Formby used to play there. The interior is amazing. They never allowed punk bands to play at the Winter Gardens, so it’s amusing that it’s now the home of a punk festival!”

The original punk rockers are now in their 50s, but the fans at Rebellion are of all ages. John says: “Some of them are just 12 and 13 years old. I often ask myself how these kids know about these groups which they certainly can’t hear on the radio. Then I realise that the answer is the Internet, of course!”

Blackpool has a regional airport, but is also about an hour from the larger airports of Liverpool and Manchester. It has excellent rail service and is only three hours from London’s Euston Station. For accommodation and other information, visit:

The Rebellion Festival will run from August 8th to 11th at Blackpool Winter Gardens. Organiser John Robb tells Speak Up that “It is very friendly and informal. You can meet your favourite groups at the bar and have a drink with them.” He adds: “There is amazing variety both in the music and the way people dress.”

Really cheap. Veramente economico.

Amazing significa “fantastico, incredibile”, mentre amusing significa “divertente”.
